Updated October 13, 2026

Dementia home care in Plantation, FL is available from Dementia Companions at $35 an hour for 40+ hours a week, with no contract. One companion screened for dementia care experience visits your loved one at home, from two hours to a full day, often to give a spouse caregiver a break. You receive 3-5 matched video profiles within 48 hours.

Dementia home care in Plantation most often supports a husband or wife who is caring for a spouse in a home the couple has owned for years. Here is what to know locally.

An established city with long-time owners

Plantation grew out of land Frederick C. Peters bought in the late 1930s and was incorporated in 1953, decades before many of its western neighbors. It had about 91,750 residents at the 2020 census, with a median age of 41.3. The Census Bureau estimates about 17 percent of residents are 65 or older, a higher share than in Coral Springs or Weston. About 31 percent were born outside the US, and about 37 percent speak a language other than English at home (2020-2024 estimates).

Plantation was named a Tree City in 1980, and its older neighborhoods are known for mature shade trees. Many couples here have lived in the same house for decades, and staying there, with the right support, is usually what they want. Our room-by-room home safety guide helps you adapt a long-time home.

When one spouse cares for the other

The most common Plantation call we get is from a wife or husband in their late 70s or 80s, or from their adult children worried about them. The healthy spouse has quietly taken over the driving, the bills and the cooking, and is now sleeping badly and skipping their own appointments.

Signs the caregiver needs a break

Missed doctor visits, weight loss, short temper, giving up friends or church, or saying “I’m fine” a little too often.

Try: our caregiver burnout check.

What a companion takes off their plate

Company and supervision for a few hours, lunch, light housekeeping, errands, and a walk, so the caregiver can rest or leave the house without worry.

Plantation’s changed hospital map

If you have not needed a hospital in Plantation lately, the map has changed. In 2021, HCA ended inpatient care at the former Plantation General Hospital. That site is now HCA Florida Plantation Emergency, a round-the-clock freestanding emergency room operated as part of HCA Florida Westside Hospital. Staff and doctors moved to the then-new HCA Florida University Hospital in Davie.

HCA Florida Westside Hospital on West Broward Boulevard is a 250-bed hospital with a round-the-clock emergency room and certified stroke care. In practice, an ER visit at the freestanding site may lead to a transfer if your loved one needs to be admitted. Keep our hospital information sheet filled in and by the door, and read our guide to a hospital stay with dementia.

Strokes, memory and the next steps

According to the National Institute on Aging, vascular dementia is caused by conditions that block or reduce blood flow to the brain, including strokes, and symptoms can come on suddenly or gradually. Not everyone who has a stroke develops dementia. If your loved one’s thinking changed after a stroke, ask their doctor about a cognitive evaluation, and read our page on vascular dementia care.

After a hospital stay, the first weeks at home are often the hardest. A companion can help keep the day calm while home health or therapy visits continue; see care after hospital discharge. This is general information, not medical advice.

Places for a calm outing

Plantation Heritage Park, acquired by the city and Broward County and opened in 1984, is a quiet choice for a gentle morning walk. Plantation Central Park is a 77-acre recreation complex that opened in 1983. The Helen B. Hoffman Plantation Library, the city’s own library, is a quiet, air-conditioned stop for magazines or picture books.

For residents 55 and older, the city’s senior programming is coordinated at the Jim Ward Community Center, with fitness sessions, talks, movies, bingo, outings and dances. A companion can go along so your loved one can keep enjoying them. Call (954) 585-2344 for the schedule.

Practical notes for Plantation

Location. Plantation sits in the middle of Broward, between I-595, the Turnpike and Broward Boulevard, so we can usually match a companion who lives a short drive away.

Heat and storms. Summer walks happen early or not at all, and afternoon thunderstorms move outings indoors. Before hurricane season, sign up for the Florida Special Needs Registry if your loved one would need shelter help, and see our hurricane guide.

Getting around. Broward County Transit’s TOPS! paratransit offers shared rides for people whose disability keeps them off regular buses, after an application and in-person assessment. The one-way fare is $3.50; reservations are at 1-866-682-2258.

How the first two weeks usually go

  1. You call and tell us about your loved one’s routine, history and what worries you most.
  2. Within 48 hours you receive 3-5 video profiles of matched companions, and you choose.
  3. The first visit is short, with you or your parent’s spouse at home, so it feels like a visit from a friend.
  4. Visits settle into a fixed rhythm, the same days and times, and you get a short note after each one.
  5. After the first month, we review the plan with you and adjust hours if needed.

Many people with dementia say they do not need help. That is common, and it is not a reason to give up. We often introduce the companion as a friend, a helper for the healthy spouse, or someone who shares an interest such as gardening or old movies. Our article on care refusal in dementia has more ideas.

If your parent lives alone in Plantation

Some Plantation residents are widowed and living alone in the family home, with children elsewhere in Broward or out of state. A daily visit can cover the riskiest parts of the day: meals, medication reminders and the afternoon hours when confusion often rises. Watch for unpaid bills, spoiled food or a car with new dents. Our page on living alone with dementia lists signs it may no longer be safe.

Questions to ask before you hire

  1. Will my husband see the same companion every visit?
  2. Can the companion work alongside a home health aide or nurse?
  3. Can we start with just a few hours and add more later?
  4. What happens if the fit is wrong?

Our answers: one consistent companion screened for dementia care experience, yes to working alongside clinical care, hours that change as you need, and a free rematch.

Is Plantation General Hospital still open?

Not as an inpatient hospital. Since 2021 the site has been HCA Florida Plantation Emergency, a round-the-clock freestanding ER that is part of HCA Florida Westside Hospital. Westside, on West Broward Boulevard, admits patients.

Can a companion give my wife a break from caring for me or my husband?

Yes. That is the most common reason Plantation families call. Two or three afternoons a week lets a spouse rest, run errands or see their own doctor.

How much is dementia home care in Plantation?

$35 an hour for 40+ hours a week. For shorter schedules, such as two 4-hour afternoons, call us. There are no fees and no contract.

Where can my loved one get a memory evaluation near Plantation?

Broward’s state-designated Memory Disorder Clinic is at Broward Health North in Deerfield Beach, (954) 786-7392. Ask their doctor about a referral.

Do your companions provide nursing or personal care?

No. Our companions provide company, supervision, meals, light housekeeping, errands, escorts, outings and medication reminders. For hands-on personal care such as bathing or toileting, families add a licensed home health agency or aide, and a nurse or hospice team can provide clinical care; the companion can work alongside them.
