In-home dementia care in Coral Springs

Dementia companions for Coral Springs families, whether a parent has lived here since the city was young or has just moved in with you.

Updated October 13, 2026

Dementia home care in Coral Springs is available from Dementia Companions at $35 an hour for 40+ hours a week. One companion screened for dementia care experience visits your loved one at home, from two hours to a full day, with no long-term contract. You receive 3-5 matched video profiles within 48 hours of your first call.

Dementia home care in Coral Springs often begins with a phone call from a busy adult child, about a parent who lives nearby or has just moved in. Here is how it works in this corner of north Broward.

A planned city, now growing older

Coral Springs was chartered in 1963 after Coral Ridge Properties bought nearly 3,900 acres of land and laid out a master plan. It grew into a city of about 134,000 at the 2020 census. It is younger than many South Florida cities: the Census Bureau estimates only about 13 percent of residents are 65 or older. About a third were born outside the US, and roughly 37 percent speak a language other than English at home (2020-2024 estimates).

In practice, we hear from two kinds of Coral Springs households. Some are long-time owners who bought in the 1970s or 1980s and now face dementia in the house they raised their children in. More often, a working couple brings a widowed parent to live with them or nearby, then discovers that memory loss makes the weekday hours hard to cover.

When a parent moves to Coral Springs to be near you

A move can make confusion look worse for a while. New streets, a new doctor and a new bedroom take away the cues a person with dementia relies on. A few things help the first months go better:

  • Keep the same daily rhythm as the old home: wake-up time, meals, a favorite TV program.
  • Bring familiar furniture, photos and the same bedspread.
  • Introduce one consistent companion early, before needs become urgent, so they are a familiar face rather than a stranger.
  • Set up Florida legal documents, such as a durable power of attorney and a health care surrogate designation. Our Florida legal and financial planning guide explains the basics.

Our page on building a daily structure has a sample routine you can adapt.

Close to Broward’s state memory clinic

Broward County’s state-designated Memory Disorder Clinic is at Broward Health North in Deerfield Beach, in north Broward. It offers cognitive screening with a team that includes a neurologist, nurse and social worker, plus a caregiver education program and a weekly support group. Appointments: (954) 786-7392.

If your loved one has not had a full evaluation, ask their doctor about a referral. Some causes of memory trouble, such as thyroid problems, vitamin deficiencies or medication side effects, can be treated. This page is general information; your loved one’s doctor is the right person for diagnosis and treatment. Our dementia stage checker can help you describe what you are seeing before the appointment.

Hospital visits and appointments

Broward Health Coral Springs, on Coral Hills Drive, is a 250-bed hospital with a 24-hour emergency department and a stroke center. Many Coral Springs residents see doctors affiliated with it or with practices along University Drive and Sample Road.

A companion can drive or ride with your loved one to appointments, help with check-in, take notes and send you a summary. Companions do not give medication or provide nursing care; if your loved one needs that, a home health agency or nurse can work alongside the companion. For more on the difference, see companion care vs home health care.

The Senior Center at Sartory Hall

The City of Coral Springs runs its senior programs from Sartory Hall, with classes and activities also held at the Kiwanis Park Community Center and the city aquatic complex. Membership is free for residents 55 and older with proof of residency. The city also offers Senior Ride, an on-demand transportation program for shopping trips, prioritized by economic and social need. Call (954) 345-2209 for details.

For a person in the early or middle stages, a class or group activity with a companion beside them can make the difference between staying involved and staying home.

Calm places for an outing

Outdoors

Coral Springs maintains more than 50 parks. Mullins Park is the largest at 70 acres, and Sandy Ridge Sanctuary, 38 acres, is the biggest of the city’s four natural conservation areas. Early mornings work best from May to October.

Best for: walkers who enjoy birds, trees and open sky.

Indoors

Broward County Library’s Northwest Regional Library is the city’s public library. The Coral Springs Museum of Art runs art classes and community programs, and the Museum of Coral Springs History is a good conversation starter for long-time residents.

Best for: hot or rainy afternoons and people who like quiet.

Outings are always optional and short. Many of the best visits happen at home, with music and familiar photos; our list of activities for home has ideas.

Broward programs that stretch your hours

The Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) of Broward County is the county’s Area Agency on Aging and the front door to public programs. Its helpline, (954) 745-9779, screens for Alzheimer’s disease services, including state-funded respite. The ADRC also runs a Caregiver Navigator Program and a Caregiver Text Support Line, keeps a directory of day care and senior centers, and lists GUIDE Dementia Care, a Medicare model that can pay up to $2,500 a year toward respite for eligible patients.

Public programs often have waiting lists. Families commonly use private dementia respite care while they wait. Long-term care insurance policies sometimes reimburse companion or homemaker care, so check your loved one’s policy.

Getting around: TOPS! paratransit

Broward County Transit’s TOPS! paratransit is a shared-ride service for people whose disability keeps them from using regular buses. Eligibility requires an application and an in-person functional assessment, and the one-way fare is $3.50. When booking, riders say whether a personal care attendant or companion will ride along. Reservations: 1-866-682-2258.

Quiet streets, canals and wandering

Like much of suburban Broward, many Coral Springs neighborhoods have winding streets, cul-de-sacs and nearby canals or lakes. Houses can look alike, which makes it easy for someone with dementia to lose their bearings on a walk they have taken for years. Water close to the back yard adds another risk.

  • Keep a recent photo and a list of places your loved one might head for, such as an old workplace or church.
  • Consider door chimes and an ID bracelet with your phone number.
  • Tell trusted neighbors, so they call you rather than wave hello.

Our Florida wandering guide covers prevention and what to do in the first minutes if someone goes missing. A companion walks with your loved one, so the daily stroll they love can continue safely.

Questions Coral Springs families should ask

  1. Will the same companion come every visit, even as hours change?
  2. Can visit notes go to both of us, and to a sibling out of state?
  3. Can a companion speak Spanish, Portuguese or Haitian Creole?
  4. What happens if Dad will not open the door on a bad day?

Our answers: one consistent companion screened for dementia care experience, video interviews to watch before you decide, notes to anyone you choose, Spanish-speaking companions on request (tell us about other languages and we will look), and a gentle, unhurried plan for first visits.
