Two counties, two sets of agencies
Our Sarasota service area spans Sarasota County and neighboring Manatee County. They share a coastline and a lot of family ties, but many public services are organized differently on each side of the county line, so it helps to know which county your loved one actually lives in. Bradenton is in Manatee, Lakewood Ranch straddles both counties, and Sarasota, Venice and North Port are in Sarasota County.
In raw numbers, Sarasota County has roughly 186,000 residents 65 and older, a far higher share than Florida’s statewide figure of about 23%. Manatee adds roughly 137,000 more. Combined, that’s well over 300,000 older adults between the two counties.

Memory evaluation
Sarasota Memorial Health Care System hosts Sarasota County’s state-designated Memory Disorder Clinic, which helps with diagnosis, caregiver education and research. Florida’s clinic list assigns Manatee County to the University of South Florida’s Memory Disorder Clinic in Tampa instead, though families can ask either clinic about referrals. For everyday hospital care, the region’s major hospitals include Sarasota Memorial Hospital and its Venice campus, Manatee Memorial Hospital and HCA Florida Blake Hospital in Bradenton, and Lakewood Ranch Medical Center.
Help for the caregiver
The two Area Agencies on Aging screen for the state’s Alzheimer’s Disease Initiative, which can fund in-home or facility respite, support groups and caregiver training when money is available. In Sarasota, the nonprofit Senior Friendship Centers runs The Caregiving Place, which offers adult day services and a caregiver resource center. The Alzheimer’s Association Florida Gulf Coast Chapter, based in Clearwater, covers both counties; its free Helpline is open around the clock.
Before choosing an adult day program, confirm it’s licensed through the state’s FloridaHealthFinder search. Our adult day vs. in-home respite comparison can help you decide.
Practical notes for Sarasota and Manatee caregivers
After Milton. Hurricane Milton made landfall in the Sarasota area as a Category 3 storm on October 9, 2024. Evacuating is hard on a person with dementia: new places, crowds and broken routines can all bring on agitation. Before the next season, look up your loved one’s zone with Know Your Zone, register them on the state’s Special Needs Registry if they qualify, and talk with Sarasota County or Manatee County Emergency Management about shelters. Our hurricane guide and agitation guide can help.
Barrier islands and bridges. Siesta Key, Longboat Key, Anna Maria Island and Venice’s island neighborhoods mean bridges, beach traffic and longer response times in peak season. If your loved one lives on a key, build extra time into every plan.
Heat and isolation. Summer is quiet here. Seasonal friends leave, clubs pause, and an older adult who lives alone may go days without a real conversation. Regular visits through the hot months can matter as much as help in winter.
How families here use Dementia Companions
Every family is different, but a few uses come up again and again in this part of Florida:
- Retired couples, one caregiver. A spouse in Venice or Lakewood Ranch books two or three afternoons a week of respite to keep up their own health and friendships.
- Children up north. Families in Michigan, Ohio or New York use the note after each visit and monthly care-plan reviews to stay in the loop.
- Engagement, not just supervision. Music, walks along the bayfront in cooler hours, and reminiscence through our memory and engagement visits.
- Bridging to the next step. Some families use in-home help while they weigh a move; our in-home care vs. memory care guide covers the trade-offs.
The rate is $35 an hour for 40+ hours a week in both counties. See the Florida cost guide and paying for dementia care to plan.
Sample weeks of dementia care in Sarasota and their cost
With so many retired couples in Sarasota and Manatee, the most common request is regular relief for a spouse. A few examples are below. Our rate is $35/hour for 40+ hours a week; call us about shorter schedules.
| Plan | Schedule | Hours a week | Weekly cost | About per month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spouse keeps a standing tee time and doctor visits | Tue and Thu, 8am-12pm | 8 | Call for a quote | |
| Three afternoons of company | Mon, Wed, Fri, 1pm-5pm | 12 | Call for a quote | |
| Most of the day, five days | Mon-Fri, 9am-4pm | 35 | Call for a quote | |
The two-morning plan is the one we see most often: the healthy spouse plays golf or tennis, sees their own doctor, or simply rests, knowing someone familiar is at home. The three-afternoon plan suits a parent living alone who is managing mornings but gets anxious or forgets lunch later in the day. The longer plan is for families who are close to considering memory care and want to try steady help at home first.
For comparison, CareScout’s 2025 survey found Florida medians of about $67,320 a year for assisted living and about $19,500 a year for adult day health care. Many local couples use a day program on some days and a companion on others.
The Caregiving Place and other local support
Senior Friendship Centers runs The Caregiving Place in both Sarasota and Venice, with caregiver resources alongside its adult day services; the direct number is (941) 556-3268, and the main line is (941) 955-2122. In Manatee County, Senior Connection Center offers TCARE, a caregiver support program for people caring for someone 60 or older.
Two other sources of paid respite: the state’s Alzheimer’s Disease Initiative, which can fund in-home, facility, emergency or extended respite of up to 30 days through your Area Agency on Aging, and Medicare’s GUIDE dementia model, under which participating providers can offer up to $2,500 a year in respite for eligible patients. Ask Sarasota Memorial’s memory clinic whether it takes part.
Questions to ask about home care in Sarasota or Manatee
- Which county are we in, and does that change which agency we call?
- Can the caregiver live near us, so US-41 and I-75 season traffic does not shorten visits?
- Can we start in the fall and pause in spring without penalty?
- Will the caregiver help us prepare for an evacuation, and stay calm with Dad if storms upset him?
- Can we meet more than one candidate before choosing?
- If my wife still enjoys her clubhouse activities, can the caregiver go with her?
With us you watch 3-5 caregiver video interviews before you decide, every companion is screened for dementia care experience, there is no contract, and the rate is $35 an hour for 40+ hours a week in both counties. Companions can go along to clubhouse activities, classes or church, staying beside your loved one so they can keep enjoying the parts of community life that still bring them pleasure. If the first match does not feel right, we rematch for free.
