This guide explains dementia home care in Lakewood Ranch, including which county services apply to your address and what a typical week looks like.
One community, two counties
Lakewood Ranch is a master-planned community of roughly 35,000 acres east of I-75, stretching from State Road 64 in Manatee County south to Fruitville Road in Sarasota County. It is not a city; it is run through community development districts and homeowners associations. The first neighborhood, Summerfield, was finished in 1995, and building has continued ever since.
The county line matters for families. Manatee County residents are served by the West Central Florida Area Agency on Aging (Senior Connection Center), while Sarasota County residents fall under the Area Agency on Aging for Southwest Florida. Check which county your loved one’s address is in before calling for county services. The statewide Elder Helpline, 1-800-963-5337, will route you correctly.

An older and growing population
At the 2020 census, the Lakewood Ranch census area had about 35,000 people, a median age above 52, and about 30 percent of residents 65 or older. Many moved here to retire in newer, gated neighborhoods with clubhouses, pools and organized activities. When dementia appears, a spouse often becomes the caregiver in a home far from the rest of the family.
Gates, HOAs and clubhouses
- We register your companion with the gate or guest system before the first visit.
- Companions can accompany your loved one to the clubhouse, pool or a fitness class and stay with them.
- Many neighborhoods are built around lakes and ponds. If your loved one wanders, tell us so the companion plans for it.
A new library and quiet routes
Manatee County’s Lakewood Ranch Library opened in January 2024 as the system’s newest branch, a two-story building with the county’s first library drive-thru window. It is a useful, cool destination for browsing books or music on a hot afternoon. Many villages also have sidewalks and paths around lakes that make a calm, familiar loop close to home, and the Braden River runs through the southern part of the community. Visits are shaped to your loved one’s stamina; many happen at home with music, games, or a simple baking project. Our memory and engagement page shows how companions plan them.
Medical care close by
Lakewood Ranch Medical Center is the community’s hospital. In January 2025, Sarasota Memorial also opened the Sarasota Memorial ER at Lakewood Ranch, a freestanding emergency room on University Parkway about three miles east of I-75, with imaging and lab services. Many residents also see specialists in Sarasota and Bradenton. A companion can drive your loved one to appointments, wait with them and send you notes. Companions do not give medication or provide clinical care, and they can work alongside home health or hospice. See companion care versus home health care.
Driving distances and traffic
University Parkway, State Road 64 and Lakewood Ranch Boulevard carry most local traffic, and the I-75 interchanges back up at rush hour and during winter season. Because Lakewood Ranch is large, a drive between villages can take a while. We match companions who live nearby and set visit times that avoid peak traffic.
Common situations
Spouse caregivers
A husband or wife needs predictable time away to rest and stay healthy. Respite visits provide it.
Best for: couples where one partner has moderate dementia.
New arrivals
A parent recently moved near an adult child and has no local friends yet. A companion offers company and routine.
Best for: parents settling into a new home.
When family lives far away
Many Lakewood Ranch retirees have children in other states. Our visit notes and monthly plan reviews keep everyone informed. See our page for long-distance families.
Planning a typical week of dementia home care in Lakewood Ranch
Most Lakewood Ranch requests come from retired couples or parents who recently moved near a son or daughter. Sample weeks:
| Plan | Schedule | Hours a week |
|---|---|---|
| Spouse keeps pickleball, friends and doctor visits | Mon and Thu, 8am-12pm | 8 |
| New arrival settling in | Mon, Wed, Fri, 10am-2pm | 12 |
| Adult child works in Tampa or Sarasota | Mon-Fri, 8am-3pm | 35 |
The two-morning plan is protected time for a caregiving spouse. The three-day plan is for a parent who is new to the community and does not yet know anyone: the companion builds a routine of the same walk, the same library visit, the same lunch, until the place feels like home. The weekday plan covers a long commute on I-75.
Our rate is $35/hour for 40+ hours a week; call us about shorter schedules. CareScout’s 2025 Florida medians are a useful yardstick: about $67,320 a year for assisted living and about $19,500 for adult day health care.
Respite and memory clinics, county by county
If your loved one lives in the Manatee County part of Lakewood Ranch, Senior Connection Center, 1-800-963-5337, offers TCARE caregiver support and screens for state Alzheimer’s Disease Initiative respite. In the Sarasota County part, the Area Agency on Aging for Southwest Florida, Elder HELPLINE (866) 413-5337, does the same. ADI respite can be in-home, at a facility, on an emergency basis, or an extended stay of up to 30 days.
Sarasota Memorial Hospital’s Memory Disorder Clinic, (941) 917-7197, is the closest state-designated clinic for many residents; the state has assigned Manatee County to the USF clinic in Tampa, (813) 974-3100. Senior Friendship Centers’ Caregiving Place in Sarasota, (941) 556-3268, offers caregiver resources and adult day services. Ask your loved one’s doctor about Medicare’s GUIDE dementia model, which can add up to $2,500 a year in respite for eligible patients.
Questions to ask before care starts
- Which county is our address in, and does that change who we call?
- Will you register the caregiver with our village gate or guest app?
- Can the caregiver go with Mom to the clubhouse, pool or a fitness class?
- Does the caregiver live nearby, given how far apart the villages are?
- How will family in other states get updates?
Our answers: we help you sort out the county question, register companions with the gate, accompany your loved one to activities, let you watch video interviews before you decide, match locally where possible, and send a note after every visit.
Before the first visit
- Village name, gate or guest-app details, and parking.
- Medication list and doctors at Lakewood Ranch Medical Center, Sarasota Memorial or elsewhere.
- The activities and routines your loved one enjoys.
- Lakes or ponds near the home, and any history of wandering.
As needs grow
A parent who moved to be near family often seems to decline faster at first, simply because everything is new. Give the routine a few weeks before making big changes. Over the longer term, watch for missed meals, falls, getting lost between villages, or a caregiving spouse who is clearly worn down. Adding hours with the same companion is usually easier on your loved one than bringing in someone new. When your loved one needs hands-on help, such as bathing or dressing, a licensed home health agency or aide provides it, and the same companion can keep visiting alongside them.
If medical needs grow, a nurse or hospice can work alongside them, and our in-home care vs. memory care comparison helps if a move is on the table.
If family lives far away, choose a nearby neighbor or friend as the local emergency contact, give them a key, and register them with the gate. A short note after every visit and a monthly plan review keep children in other states informed.
Tell us about your loved one’s favorite clubhouse activities, too, so visits can include them.
A printed doctor and medication list by the door helps at every appointment.
