Florida’s fourth-largest city, spread wide
Pembroke Pines had about 171,000 residents in 2020, making it one of Florida’s largest cities. It runs from the Florida Turnpike west past I-75 to the edge of the Everglades, with Pines Boulevard as its main east-west road. About half of residents are Hispanic, and the city is home to many families from across Latin America and the Caribbean. Housing is mostly single-family homes and townhouses, plus several age-restricted communities.

Century Village and other 55+ communities
Century Village at Pembroke Pines is one of Broward’s best-known 55+ communities. Life there revolves around clubs, classes and friends. Dementia can slowly pull someone away from all of that. A companion can walk your loved one to the activity they still enjoy, sit with them at a class or a show, and bring them home before they get tired or overwhelmed. If your loved one is a spouse caregiver in a 55+ community, a few regular hours of respite let them keep their own friendships going.
In any gated or age-restricted community, we register the companion with the gate or guest system before the first visit.
Places that work for a visit
- C.B. Smith Park, one of Broward County’s large regional parks, has room for an unhurried walk.
- Broward County Library’s Southwest Regional Library is a quiet, air-conditioned place for magazines, large-print books or music.
- City parks and community centers near many neighborhoods, good for a short morning walk.
- Home activities: cooking a family recipe, sorting photos, gardening on the patio. See dementia activities.
Two Memorial hospitals in the city
Memorial Hospital West and Memorial Hospital Pembroke are both in Pembroke Pines, part of the public Memorial Healthcare System based in Hollywood. Memorial Hospital Miramar is just south. Having hospitals so close is convenient for appointments and follow-up visits. A companion can escort your loved one, help them through check-in, and send you a summary. Companions are not nurses and do not give medication; they can work alongside home health or hospice teams.
Planning a typical week of dementia home care in Pembroke Pines
| Plan | Schedule | Hours a week |
|---|---|---|
| Parent alone while family works | Mon-Fri, 10am-2pm | 20 |
| Break for a spouse caregiver | Tue and Thu, 1pm-5pm | 8 |
| Errands and appointments | One 3-hour visit a week | 3 |
| Century Village activities with support | Mon, Wed, Fri, 9am-12pm | 9 |
The weekday plan is the classic Pembroke Pines arrangement: a parent who moved in with family is not alone for the middle of the day. The two-afternoon plan protects a spouse caregiver’s health. The single errand visit suits families who mostly need help getting to Memorial Hospital West or Pembroke appointments. The Century Village plan keeps someone in their clubs and classes, with a companion beside them.
For comparison, CareScout’s 2025 survey put Florida’s median for assisted living at about $67,320 a year.

Local realities
Distance. Pembroke Pines is wide, and a drive from the eastern neighborhoods to the far west can take a while on Pines Boulevard. We match companions who live nearby.
Wandering near water. Lakes and canals are part of nearly every neighborhood. If your loved one has tried to leave home alone, read our wandering guide and tell us so the companion can plan for it.
Storms. Western Broward is inland, but power outages and flooded streets after storms are common. Keep supplies and medications ready.
Language. Ask for a Spanish-speaking companion if that is your loved one’s first language.
When a parent moves in with you
Many Pembroke Pines households are multigenerational. A parent with dementia may have moved in after a fall, a hospital stay, or the loss of a spouse. That arrangement works best when the adult child is not the only source of care. A companion during work hours means your parent is not alone all day, and you come home to someone who has eaten, been outside and had company. It also protects your own health and job. Our article on building a calming daily routine helps the whole household settle into a rhythm, and the daily routine planner lets you write it down for the companion.
Respite and support in western Broward
The Aging and Disability Resource Center of Broward County, helpline (954) 745-9779, screens families for the state’s Alzheimer’s Disease Initiative. That program can fund in-home or facility respite, emergency respite, and extended respite of up to 30 days. The ADRC also offers a Caregiver Navigator Program, a Caregiver Text Support Line, and a directory of day care and senior centers.
The ADRC lists GUIDE Dementia Care too: under Medicare’s GUIDE model, launched in July 2024, participating providers can offer a support line, caregiver training and up to $2,500 a year in respite for eligible patients. For a memory evaluation, Broward’s state-designated clinic is the Broward Health Memory Disorder Center in Deerfield Beach, (954) 786-7392.
Questions to ask before you hire
- Can the caregiver be added to the Century Village gate list or our HOA guest system?
- Does the caregiver live in western Broward, so Pines Boulevard does not eat into visits?
- Is a Spanish-speaking caregiver available?
- What happens near the lake or canal behind the house?
- Can we change hours as our work schedules change?
Our answers: gate registration before the first visit, local matching, Spanish-speaking companions on request, companions screened for dementia care experience, water safety in the care plan, and no contract.
Before the first visit
- Gate or guest-system details and where the companion should park.
- Medication list and doctors at Memorial Hospital West, Memorial Hospital Pembroke or elsewhere.
- The clubs, classes or church your loved one still enjoys.
- Family members who should receive visit notes.
Grandchildren and a grandparent with dementia
In many Pembroke Pines homes, three generations share a roof. Children can be wonderful company for a grandparent with dementia, but they should not be in charge of safety, medications or the stove, and teenagers need their own lives too. A companion during after-school hours can keep the house calm, involve your parent in small family moments like setting the table or reading with the kids, and give everyone room to breathe. Our guide to helping children understand dementia has age-by-age tips.
As needs grow
Needs tend to increase over time. A parent who needs a few hours of company now may later need someone with them most of the day, and eventually hands-on help with bathing, dressing and toileting. That personal care comes from a licensed home health agency or aide, and our companion can keep visiting alongside them for company, meals and outings. If hospice or nursing care is needed later, your companion can keep visiting alongside that team.
Signs it is time to add hours include falls, weight loss, missed medications, or confusion that worsens in the late afternoon. Talk with your loved one’s doctor about any sudden change, which can have a medical cause such as an infection.
Families with roots across Latin America and the Caribbean often tell us the details matter most: a morning cafecito, a favorite telenovela, salsa or merengue on the radio, a rosary in the afternoon. Share those with us. They shape the companion profiles you see, and they often do more to calm a difficult afternoon than anything else we can offer.
Finally, if your loved one has a pet, tell us. A companion can help with feeding and short walks, which keeps a source of comfort and routine in place.
