In-home dementia care in Hollywood

In-home dementia companionship in Hollywood, Florida, from beachfront condos on A1A to family homes west of I-95.

Updated October 12, 2026

Dementia home care in Hollywood, FL is available from Dementia Companions for $35 an hour for 40+ hours a week. One companion screened for dementia care experience visits your loved one at home or in their condo, from two hours to a full day. Spanish-speaking companions are available, and you receive 3-5 matched video profiles within 48 hours.

Dementia home care in Hollywood looks different on the beach than west of I-95. This guide covers both, plus costs and county help.

Hollywood at a glance

Hollywood is Broward County’s third-largest city, with about 153,000 residents in 2020. It stretches from the Atlantic, where roughly five to six miles of beach are lined with condos and small hotels, past Young Circle and downtown, to suburban neighborhoods west of I-95 and toward the Turnpike. In 2015 census estimates, about a third of residents spoke Spanish at home and nearly 5 percent spoke French or Haitian Creole. About 35 percent were born outside the US.

Beach condos versus western neighborhoods

On the beach

Condo towers along A1A mean guest lists, scarce parking and elevator fobs. We arrange access before the first visit. Balconies and the beach itself call for a clear safety plan if your loved one tends to wander.

Best for: retirees living alone or as a couple in a high-rise.

West of I-95

Single-family homes, often with a spouse caregiver at home and adult children nearby but working. Visits tend to focus on daytime company, meals and a break for the caregiver.

Best for: multigenerational and spouse-caregiver households.

Outings Hollywood does well

The Hollywood Beach Broadwalk, about 2.5 miles of paved promenade along the sand, is flat and easy, with benches and shade from the cafés. Early morning is best. ArtsPark at Young Circle, a 10-acre park downtown, has open lawns and a calendar of free events. Topeekeegee Yugnee (T.Y.) Park, a large county park of about 138 acres, works for an easy walk on a cooler morning. The Anne Kolb Nature Center protects about 1,500 acres of mangroves and has short trails. Broward County Library’s Hollywood Branch and Hollywood Beach branch offer calm indoor time.

Outings are always optional, and short. Many visits are at home, built around music, simple cooking, and familiar photos. Our memory and engagement page describes how companions plan them.

Memorial Healthcare System’s home base

Memorial Regional Hospital and Memorial Regional Hospital South are both in Hollywood, part of the public Memorial Healthcare System that also runs hospitals in Pembroke Pines and Miramar. Many Hollywood residents see their doctors in Memorial’s network. A companion can escort your loved one to appointments, wait with them and send a summary, but cannot give medication or provide nursing care. If your loved one is admitted, bring our hospital information sheet so staff know how to approach them.

Signs it may be time for help

  1. Missed meals or spoiled food in the fridge.
  2. Unpaid bills or unusual purchases.
  3. Getting lost on familiar routes, such as Hollywood Boulevard or Sheridan Street.
  4. A spouse caregiver who is visibly exhausted.

None of these is a diagnosis, and new or sudden confusion can have medical causes such as infection. Our article on sudden confusion and delirium explains when to call the doctor.

Practical notes

Storms and flooding. The barrier island and the areas near the Intracoastal are in Broward County evacuation zones. Plan in advance who drives your loved one inland and where they will stay.

Traffic. I-95, US-1 and Hollywood Boulevard get congested, and A1A slows on weekends and in winter season. We schedule companions who live nearby.

Heat. Summer Broadwalk walks happen before 9am or not at all.

How we match in Hollywood

We ask about more than diagnosis. Did your loved one run a business on Hollywood Boulevard, raise kids in Emerald Hills, or retire here from Montreal or Bogotá? Do they like quiet or conversation? Are mornings or afternoons harder? Those answers shape the 3-5 video profiles you receive. You choose who meets your loved one, and if the fit is not right after a few visits, we rematch for free.

Planning a typical week of dementia home care in Hollywood

Three sample weeks, one for each kind of Hollywood household we hear from most:

PlanScheduleHours a week
Beach condo, living aloneMon-Fri, 8am-11am15
West of I-95, spouse caregiverTue and Thu, 1pm-6pm10
Multigenerational home, family at workMon-Fri, 9am-3pm30

The beach plan puts the visit early, so a Broadwalk stroll happens before the heat and the companion can check that breakfast was eaten and pills were taken. The spouse plan gives a husband or wife two long afternoons a week. The weekday plan covers the hours when a parent who lives with their children would otherwise be alone.

Our rate is $35 an hour for 40+ hours a week; call us about shorter schedules. For context, CareScout’s 2025 Florida medians: about $19,500 a year for adult day health care and about $67,320 for assisted living.

Respite and county programs in Broward

The Aging and Disability Resource Center of Broward County is the place to start. Its helpline, (954) 745-9779, screens for state Alzheimer’s Disease Initiative respite, which can be in-home, facility-based, emergency or extended up to 30 days. The ADRC also runs a Caregiver Navigator Program and a Caregiver Text Support Line, keeps a directory of day care and senior centers, and lists GUIDE Dementia Care, part of a Medicare model that can include up to $2,500 a year in respite for eligible patients.

For memory evaluation, Broward’s state-designated clinic is the Broward Health Memory Disorder Center in Deerfield Beach, (954) 786-7392. The Alzheimer’s Association Helpline, 800-272-3900, offers care consultations in many languages, any hour.

Questions Hollywood families should ask

  1. Can you sort out the condo guest list, parking and elevator fob before the first visit?
  2. Is there a caregiver who speaks Spanish, French or Haitian Creole?
  3. What is the plan for balconies and the beach if Mom has wandered before?
  4. Who helps get Dad off the barrier island if an evacuation is ordered?
  5. Can hours change week to week?

Our answers: building access arranged in advance, bilingual companions on request, wandering and balcony safety built into the care plan, video interviews to watch before you decide, a storm plan agreed before hurricane season, and no contract.

Before the first visit

  • Building or house access, parking and any beach-access rules.
  • Medication list and doctors, including any at Memorial Regional Hospital.
  • The language your loved one prefers and the music, food and places they love.
  • Who should receive visit notes, including relatives in Canada or Latin America.

Living alone in a beach condo

Many of our Hollywood clients on the barrier island live alone. That can work well for a while with a daily visit and an engaged building staff. Ask the front desk to call you directly if they notice your loved one confused in the lobby or leaving at odd hours. Watch for unpaid association fees, spoiled food, or new dents in the car. When those appear, longer or twice-daily visits often help, and our page on living alone with dementia lists the signs that it may no longer be safe.

As needs grow

Families west of I-95 often start with two afternoons a week for a spouse and move to weekday coverage as dementia progresses. Our companions do not provide hands-on personal care such as bathing and dressing; for that, families bring in a licensed home health agency or aide, and the companion works alongside them. If medical needs increase, a nurse or hospice team can work alongside the companion, who keeps providing company, meals and outings. Keeping the same companion through those changes is one of the most comforting things you can do for your loved one.

If your parents spend winters in Hollywood and summers in Canada or the Northeast, tell us their dates. Visits can start the week they arrive and pause when they leave, and we try to bring back the same companion each season so the first visit of the year feels like a reunion rather than meeting a stranger.

Tell us your loved one’s favorite Broadwalk café or bench, too.
