Dementia care in Riverview is available from Dementia Companions at $35 an hour, for 40+ hours a week. We match one companion screened for dementia care experience who visits your loved one at home for two hours up to a full day. You receive 3-5 matched video profiles within 48 hours, with no long-term contract.

Dementia care in Riverview usually starts with a simple problem: a parent or grandparent who is home alone most of the day in one of the fastest-growing suburbs in Hillsborough County.

A boomtown south of Tampa, with grandparents in tow

Riverview is an unincorporated community in southern Hillsborough County, about 12 miles southeast of downtown Tampa by US-301 and the Selmon Expressway. It grew from about 71,000 residents in 2010 to roughly 107,000 in 2020, according to census figures. The median age was 36, and about 11 percent of residents were 65 or older. About 27 percent of residents are Hispanic.

Those numbers describe a young, commuter suburb. They also hide a common Riverview story: a widowed parent who moved into a new subdivision to be near the grandchildren, sometimes to help raise them, and who now forgets appointments, repeats questions or gets turned around on the way home. In a neighborhood built in the last 15 years, that parent often knows few neighbors and no longer drives far.

How dementia care in Riverview usually works

Most Riverview families we talk with need daytime coverage while adults commute and children are at school. A companion arrives after the household leaves, makes breakfast, gives medication reminders, goes for a walk or a drive, and stays until someone gets home. Visits run from about two hours up to a full day, and you keep the same companion week after week so your loved one sees a familiar face.

  • One consistent companion, screened for dementia care experience.
  • $35 an hour for 40+ hours a week, with no long-term contract.
  • 3-5 matched caregiver video profiles within 48 hours of your first call.
  • A short note after every visit, and a care-plan review each month.

Companions are non-medical. They help with company, meals, light housekeeping, errands and reminders, and they work alongside home health nurses or hospice if your loved one needs clinical care. Our comparison of companion care and home health care explains the difference.

Two hospitals inside Riverview now

For years, Riverview families drove to Brandon or Tampa for hospital care. That has changed. BayCare’s St. Joseph’s Hospital-South opened in Riverview in February 2015 with 90 beds and has grown to 223, with a 55-bed emergency department. AdventHealth Riverview opened in October 2024 with 82 beds, emergency care and surgical services, and plans to expand.

Two nearby hospitals help, but a hospital visit is still hard on someone with dementia. Bright lights, waiting and new faces can trigger confusion. A companion can ride along to appointments, keep your loved one calm in the waiting room, and send you a summary afterward. Our hospital information sheet is worth filling out now and keeping by the door.

Places for an unhurried outing

The Riverview Public Library on Balm Riverview Road replaced a small 1979 branch with a 35,000-square-foot building. It has a screened-in reading porch and an outdoor garden, which suit a quiet morning with a newspaper or a picture book. Call the library at (813) 273-3652 to ask about upcoming programs.

Bell Creek Nature Preserve is another green space close to home. Farther east, the county’s Alafia River Corridor Nature Preserve covers more than 4,000 acres and is free from sunrise to sunset, though trails can hold standing water in the rainy season. For many people with dementia, the best outing is the shortest one: the same loop, the same bench, the same stop for coffee. Our activity ideas include plenty for days when it is too hot to go out.

Senior centers and adult day options in south county

Hillsborough County Aging Services runs senior centers and adult day programs that pair well with companion visits:

  • Ruskin Senior Center, 905 6th St. S.E., Ruskin, (813) 672-1106. Free for Hillsborough adults 50 and older, with classes, fitness and meals for registered participants 60 and older.
  • Adult day services for residents 60 and older with reduced physical, mental or social function, on a sliding fee scale. Locations include the Bloomingdale center in Brandon and the Wimauma Senior Center. Call the county’s Customer Care Team at (813) 272-5250.

Some Riverview families use adult day care three days a week and a companion on the other two. Our guide to adult day care versus in-home respite walks through the trade-offs.

Getting to appointments without a car

Many older Riverview residents stop driving before the rest of the family is ready to take over. Hillsborough County’s Sunshine Line, (813) 272-7272, provides free door-to-door rides on weekdays for eligible seniors, people with disabilities and lower-income residents, to medical appointments, grocery stores and more. You enroll first, then book two to seven days ahead. Drivers help to and from the door but do not go inside, so a person with moderate dementia may need someone to meet them.

A companion can drive your loved one instead and stay through the appointment. If the conversation about the car keys is still ahead of you, our guide on giving up driving may help.

When the Alafia rises

The Alafia River runs along Riverview’s northern edge. After Hurricane Milton in October 2024, the river upstream in Lithia rose above 23 feet, its highest recorded flooding there since 1933. Even when your own street stays dry, storms bring power outages and road closures that can strand someone at home.

  • Keep at least a week of medications and supplies on hand from June through November.
  • Register your loved one with the Florida Special Needs Registry if they would need help evacuating. Registering is not a guarantee of help, but it lets emergency managers plan.
  • Write down a storm plan that names who checks on your loved one, and share it with the companion.

For a memory evaluation, the USF Memory Disorders Clinic in Tampa, (813) 974-3100, is one of Florida’s state-designated clinics. The Alzheimer’s Association Helpline, 800-272-3900, is free, open around the clock, and offers interpreters in more than 200 languages. If you are caring for a parent and children at the same time, our caregiver burnout check takes a few minutes.
