This guide covers dementia home care in Brandon for working families: weekly plans, real costs, respite and local resources.

A big unincorporated suburb

Brandon is not a city. It is an unincorporated community in eastern Hillsborough County, about 11 miles east of downtown Tampa, with roughly 115,000 residents in 2020. It blends into Valrico to the east and Riverview to the south, and many people use “Brandon” for the whole area. About a quarter of residents are Hispanic, and the median age is younger than the county’s retirement areas, around 37. Still, about 14 percent of residents are 65 or older, and many live with adult children.

What families in Brandon tend to need

The most common call we get from Brandon sounds like this: Mom moved in with us after Dad died, she’s started repeating herself and getting confused, and we both work. Brandon is a commuter suburb, and long days on I-75, the Selmon Expressway or I-4 leave a parent alone for many hours. A companion fills those hours with company, a hot meal, and a reminder to take afternoon pills. Our page on dementia and living alone covers the warning signs even when a parent shares a home but spends the day alone.

Where a Brandon visit might go

  • The Brandon Regional Library, a Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library branch that opened in 1991 and shares a building with Center Place Fine Arts, for reading, music or a craft program.
  • Lithia Springs Park, a county park to the southeast, for a shaded walk on a cooler morning.
  • A neighborhood loop around a retention pond, a stop at the grocery store on Brandon Boulevard, or lunch out somewhere familiar.
  • At home: cooking together, sorting a button tin, or old movies. Ideas on our activities page.

Hospital and medical care

HCA Florida Brandon Hospital, formerly Brandon Regional Hospital, is the main hospital in the community. To the south, BayCare’s St. Joseph’s Hospital-South serves Riverview. A companion can drive your loved one to appointments, wait with them, and send you a summary of what the doctor said. Companions do not give medications or provide clinical care, but they can work alongside nurses, home health or hospice. Read companion care versus home health care if you are not sure which you need.

Roads, distances and timing

Brandon Boulevard (State Road 60), the I-75 interchanges, US-301 and the Selmon Expressway are busy most of the day. Distances across Brandon, Valrico and Riverview add up. We match companions who live in eastern Hillsborough and schedule visits to avoid peak traffic.

Storms and summer

Brandon is inland, but storms bring outages, downed trees and flooded streets, and the Alafia River area can flood. Keep a week of medications and supplies on hand. In summer, outings happen early and companions watch hydration closely.

When to bring in help

Families often wait until a crisis. Earlier signs worth acting on include a parent who repeats the same question many times a day, leaves the stove on, gets lost on a familiar drive, or seems anxious when left alone. The dementia stage checker gives you a general picture to bring to your loved one’s doctor; it is not a diagnosis.

Bilingual households

If your loved one is more comfortable in Spanish, ask for a Spanish-speaking companion. Our Spanish-language pages are available for relatives who prefer to read in Spanish.

Planning a typical week of dementia home care in Brandon

Brandon’s commuter rhythm shapes most plans. Four sample weeks, with monthly cost estimated as weekly × 52 ÷ 12:

PlanScheduleHours a week
Three weekday morningsMon, Wed, Fri, 9am-1pm12
Every weekday while you commuteMon-Fri, 9am-3pm30
Saturday respite blockSaturday, 9am-2pm5
Early start for a long commuteMon-Fri, 7am-12pm25

Three mornings suit a parent who manages afternoons alone but forgets breakfast and pills. The full weekday plan is for the most common Brandon situation: Mom moved in after Dad died and both of you work. The Saturday block gives a caregiving spouse or adult child a real day off. The early-start plan exists because the drive downtown on the Selmon Expressway or I-75 often starts before 7:30.

For comparison, CareScout’s 2025 survey found Florida medians of about $19,500 a year for adult day health care and about $67,320 for assisted living.

Our rate is $35/hour for 40+ hours a week; call us about shorter schedules. There is no contract. Compare options on our dementia care cost page, or weigh adult day care against in-home respite.

Respite and support in eastern Hillsborough

Hillsborough County’s Area Agency on Aging is Senior Connection Center, the Elder Helpline at 1-800-963-5337. It runs TCARE, a caregiver support program for people caring for someone 60 or older, and screens for the state’s Alzheimer’s Disease Initiative, which can fund in-home, facility, emergency or extended respite of up to 30 days.

For a memory evaluation, the state-designated clinic for Hillsborough is the USF Memory Disorder Clinic in Tampa, (813) 974-3100. Ask whether your loved one’s doctor or clinic participates in Medicare’s GUIDE dementia model; since July 2024, participants can offer care navigation, a support line and up to $2,500 a year in respite for eligible patients. The Alzheimer’s Association Helpline, 800-272-3900, is free and open around the clock.

Questions Brandon families should ask

  1. Can visits start at 7am so we can leave for work on time?
  2. Does the caregiver live in Brandon, Valrico or Riverview?
  3. Is a Spanish-speaking caregiver available?
  4. Who will be with Mom if the caregiver is late or sick?
  5. Can the caregiver stay with Mom while our teenagers are home?

Our answers: early starts are possible, we match companions in eastern Hillsborough, bilingual companions are available, every companion is screened for dementia care experience, and we will talk through a backup plan with you when we set the schedule. Companions can be there alongside older grandchildren so no one is put in charge of a grandparent’s safety.

Before the first visit

  • House key or garage code, and where the companion should park.
  • Your parent’s routine, including naps and favorite TV programs.
  • Medication list and doctors at HCA Florida Brandon Hospital or elsewhere.
  • Who should get visit notes, and how to reach you at work.

When a parent moved in with you

A parent who moves in after a loss or a hospital stay often seems more confused at first. New rooms, new routines and grief all add up. Give it a few weeks with a steady daily rhythm before deciding how much help is needed long term. Labels on cupboards, a simple calendar on the fridge, and the same companion arriving at the same time each day all help. Our guide to daily routine and routine planner can get you started.

It also helps to protect your own evenings and weekends. If you are covering every hour outside work, burnout comes quickly. Our caregiver burnout check is a quick way to see where you stand.

One more Brandon-specific tip: if your parent still attends a church, a senior club or a standing lunch with friends, keep it on the calendar as long as it brings them joy. A companion can drive them, stay nearby and bring them home before they tire. Those familiar weekly anchors often matter more to a person with dementia than anything new we could suggest.

If your parent speaks mostly Spanish, ask for a bilingual companion. Hearing their first language from a familiar person can calm a confusing afternoon, and it makes it easier for your parent to tell the companion what they need.

And if your parent has a pet, tell us. Feeding, brushing or a short walk with the dog can anchor a visit and give your parent a sense of purpose, which matters a great deal on harder days.
