You receive 3-5 matched video profiles within 48 hours, with no long-term contract.

Dementia care in North Port is often a story about two people: one living with memory loss, and a husband or wife doing nearly all the caregiving alone.

A retirement city that keeps growing

North Port began as a land venture. General Development Corporation laid it out as the Sarasota County side of its Port Charlotte development, and it incorporated in 1959 as North Port Charlotte with 21 residents. Voters dropped “Charlotte” from the name in 1974. Today it covers more than 100 square miles in southern Sarasota County.

The city reached about 74,800 residents in the 2020 census, up from roughly 57,400 in 2010, and later estimates put it near 97,000. The 2020 median age was 49, and about 28 percent of residents were 65 or older, more than double the share in many Tampa or Orlando suburbs. In a city with this many retirees, the person providing daily care is often a husband or wife rather than an adult child.

When a spouse is the whole care team

Spouse caregivers often wait too long to ask for help. They manage the medications, the driving, the night-time wandering and the repeated questions, and they skip their own doctor visits. Signs that a caregiving spouse needs a break include poor sleep, missed meals, short temper and pulling away from friends. Our caregiver burnout check takes a few minutes, and our guide for spouse caregivers covers the emotional side.

A companion gives the healthy spouse protected time. Three afternoons a week is enough for a round of golf, a church group, a medical appointment or simply a nap without listening for footsteps. While you are out, the companion keeps your loved one company with music, an old photo album, a short walk or a simple kitchen task.

How dementia care in North Port works with us

  • One consistent companion, screened for dementia care experience, for two hours up to a full day.
  • $35 an hour for 40+ hours a week, with no hidden fees and no long-term contract.
  • 3-5 matched video profiles within 48 hours of your first call to (689) 333-6079, Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm ET.
  • A short note after each visit, which grown children in other states can read too.

Companions are non-medical. They give medication reminders and help with meals, light housekeeping and errands, but they do not give medications or provide nursing care. They can work alongside home health or hospice; see companion care versus home health care.

Emergency care today, a hospital by 2028

North Port does not yet have a full hospital. The closest emergency care inside the city is the Sarasota Memorial Health Care Center and ER at Toledo Blade, staffed around the clock, with imaging, lab services, primary care and rehabilitation on the same campus. Inpatient stays usually mean a drive to Venice, Sarasota or Port Charlotte.

That is changing. Sarasota Memorial is building Sarasota Memorial Hospital-North Port near I-75 and North Sumter Boulevard, planned to open in late 2028 with 100 beds. Until then, plan for longer trips. A companion can drive your loved one to appointments, stay through the visit and send you a summary. Keep our hospital information sheet filled in for ER visits.

Springs, creeks and libraries for gentle outings

Warm Mineral Springs Park remains open to swimmers, though its historic buildings have been closed since Hurricane Ian; the city has planned upgrades, including new restrooms and an extension of the Legacy Trail to the parking lot. Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park, inside the city, offers a quiet nature walk on a cool morning.

The Morgan Family Community Center on W. Price Boulevard has outdoor trails and a fitness center, and is open weekdays and Saturdays. Sarasota County runs two libraries in the city: the North Port Library on Tamiami Trail and the Shannon Staub Library on Career Lane, both reachable at (941) 861-1110. A library visit is a calm, air-conditioned outing on hot afternoons. More ideas are on our activities page.

Distances, driving and getting around

North Port is spread out, and many errands mean a drive along US-41, Price Boulevard or Toledo Blade Boulevard. When a person with dementia can no longer drive safely, a couple can lose their independence overnight. Our guide on giving up the car keys may help with that conversation.

Sarasota County’s Breeze OnDemand service has operated a North Port zone, with rides booked by app or phone for a $2 fare, but trips must start and end inside the zone and may be shared. For a person with moderate dementia, a companion who drives and stays alongside is often the safer option.

What Hurricane Ian taught North Port families

When Hurricane Ian made landfall just south of Sarasota County in September 2022, North Port saw severe flooding. Roads turned into channels, families were trapped in their homes, and the flooded Myakka River closed a stretch of I-75. The Holiday Park mobile home community was nearly destroyed. In 2024, ahead of Milton, Sarasota County warned that residents of low-lying areas and manufactured homes could face evacuation orders.

  • Check your evacuation level at scgov.net and decide in advance where your loved one will go.
  • Register on the Florida Special Needs Registry if they would need help evacuating; it is not a guarantee of help, but it lets officials plan.
  • Pack copies of medication lists, ID and a recent photo in a waterproof bag.

A sudden move to a shelter can be frightening for someone with dementia. Our hurricane guide for dementia caregivers explains how to make it easier.

For comparison, CareScout’s 2025 survey found Florida medians of about $19,500 a year for adult day health care and $67,320 a year for assisted living. Some long-term-care insurance policies reimburse companion or homemaker care, so check your policy. See our Florida cost guide and dementia respite care page.

Questions North Port couples should ask any caregiver

  1. Will the same person come every visit, or a rotating team?
  2. Can visits be scheduled around my own doctor appointments, which may be in Venice or Sarasota?
  3. Can the caregiver drive my husband or wife, and stay with them at the appointment?
  4. Can our children out of state receive the visit notes?
  5. Is there a contract, a minimum number of hours, or a cancellation fee?

Our answers: one consistent companion, video interviews you can watch before you decide, schedules are built around your week, companions can escort to appointments, notes can go to anyone you choose, and there is no contract.
