Dementia home care in Lehigh Acres has to work with two local realities: very long distances inside the community, and family caregivers who spend a big part of the day commuting.

Lehigh Acres: big, young and still growing

Lehigh Acres is an unincorporated community in eastern Lee County, not a city. It grew from about 86,800 residents in 2010 to 114,287 in the 2020 Census. It began in the 1950s, when Chicago businessman Lee Ratner bought ranch land and partners divided it into roughly 152,000 small home lots. Today the community has more than 1,400 miles of roads.

It is also younger than most of Southwest Florida. The median age was about 35 in 2020, and only about 13 percent of residents are 65 or older. That changes who the caregiver usually is. In Lehigh Acres, the person caring for someone with dementia is often a working adult child or grandchild, not a retired spouse.

Grandparents at home, families on the road

The Census Bureau’s 2020-2024 figures put the average commute for Lehigh Acres workers at about 38 minutes each way. State Road 82 alone runs about 15 miles west to central Fort Myers, and Lee Boulevard and Homestead Road carry much of the local traffic. A parent or grandparent with dementia may be at home alone for ten hours or more.

A companion covers that stretch. They make breakfast or lunch, give medication reminders, keep your loved one company, and watch for the small changes that worry families: a missed meal, a bruise, a door left open. At the end of the visit you get a short note, so you are not guessing about the day while you drive home.

Bilingual care for a bilingual community

About 49 percent of Lehigh Acres residents are Hispanic, and just over half of residents age 5 and up speak a language other than English at home. Nearly a third were born outside the United States. Many households include grandparents who grew up in Latin America and speak mainly Spanish.

Dementia often takes away a second language first. A grandmother who once managed in English may now understand only Spanish, especially late in the day. Ask for a Spanish-speaking companion when you call, and tell us about the music, food and faith that matter to your loved one. Family members can read our Spanish pages on qué es la demencia and el costo del cuidado.

Getting around Lehigh Acres

With so many miles of streets spread over a wide area, Lehigh Acres is hard to get around without a car. That matters when your loved one has stopped driving.

  • LeeTran buses. Route 110 runs between Lehigh Acres and Edison Mall in Fort Myers, and Route 515 is a Lehigh circulator between Homestead Plaza and Joel Boulevard.
  • Passport paratransit. LeeTran’s ADA service is shared-ride and booked a day or more ahead, for riders who are approved. Pickups and drop-offs must be within three-quarters of a mile of a LeeTran route, so check your loved one’s address first. Call 239-533-0300.
  • A companion who drives. For many Lehigh Acres families, the simplest answer is a companion who handles appointments, groceries and the pharmacy run.

If your loved one is still driving and you are worried, our guide to giving up the car keys helps with that hard conversation.

Places to go in Lehigh Acres

  • Lehigh Acres Senior Center, on Plaza Drive. Run by a nonprofit with long-standing county support, it has offered membership to people 50 and older, with classes such as Dancercise and a painting group. A companion can go along and help your loved one join in.
  • East County Regional Library, on Gunnery Road. Founded in 1962 as the Lehigh Acres Public Library, it is free, air-conditioned and has easy parking.
  • Lehigh Acres Community Park, on Village Lakes Boulevard. Walking trails added in a 2022 expansion, plus picnic shelters for a shaded break.

On days when going out is too much, our list of dementia activities has simple ideas for home.

Hospital care close to home

HCA Florida Lehigh Hospital, formerly Lehigh Regional Medical Center, became part of HCA Florida Healthcare in February 2025. It is a 53-bed hospital with emergency services, cardiology and general surgery. For specialist care, many families travel to Fort Myers. A companion can sit with your loved one at appointments and keep notes, and our hospital guide for dementia families explains how to prepare for an emergency visit.

Companions are not nurses and do not provide medical care. If your loved one needs skilled care at home after a hospital stay, a companion can work alongside the home health agency. See care after hospital discharge.

Memory evaluation and support in Lee County

The state-funded Memory Disorder Clinic for Lee County is LPG Memory Care, part of Lee Health, on Creekside Lane in Fort Myers, (239) 343-9220. It offers full memory and cognition evaluations with geriatric providers and a neuropsychologist, plus caregiver support and family counseling. If your loved one has not had a full evaluation, ask their doctor about a referral; some causes of confusion are treatable.

For help paying for breaks, call the Area Agency on Aging for Southwest Florida’s Elder HELPLINE, (866) 413-5337. It covers Lee and six other counties and can screen for the state’s Alzheimer’s Disease Initiative, which funds respite (in-home, facility, emergency, or extended up to 30 days) and caregiver support. The Alzheimer’s Association Helpline, 800-272-3900, has bilingual staff.

The three-day plan suits a grandparent who manages part of the week, with the companion doing the driving. The weekend plan gives the family member who carries most of the load one predictable day off. For comparison, CareScout’s 2025 Florida median for non-medical home care worked out to about $73,216 a year at 44 hours a week. Questions to ask any caregiver before you hire

  1. Does the caregiver live close enough to arrive on time, even when State Road 82 is backed up?
  2. Will they speak with Abuela in Spanish, and can they write visit notes in English for the rest of the family?
  3. Can they drive, and whose car do they use for appointments and errands?
  4. What happens on a day when my parent refuses help or will not open the door?
  5. Is there a contract, a minimum number of hours, or a fee to cancel?

Our answers: local matching where possible, bilingual companions on request, video interviews you can watch before you decide, appointment escort and errands, a gentle approach to refusal with a call to you if needed, and no contract. Our guide on how to choose a dementia caregiver has a longer checklist.
