In-home dementia care in Marco Island
Companion care at home for island residents with dementia, year-round or just for the season, from a caregiver who knows the bridges and the logistics.
Dementia home care in Marco Island is available from Dementia Companions at $35 an hour for 40+ hours a week. We match one companion screened for dementia care experience who visits your loved one at home or in their condo, from two hours to a full day. You receive 3-5 matched video profiles within 48 hours, and visits can follow the winter season.
Dementia home care in Marco Island has to work around bridges, seasons and long drives to the mainland. Here is how to plan it.
Florida’s oldest island community
Marco Island, a city in Collier County about 20 miles south of Naples, had about 15,800 year-round residents in 2020. The median age was 66.5, and more than half of residents were 65 or older. That is among the oldest populations of any city in Florida. In winter the island’s population more than doubles, and in 2020 more than half of housing units were counted as vacant, mostly because they are seasonal homes.
For families, this creates a particular pattern. A parent may live here alone for months while children are up north. Or a couple arrives for the season and the family realizes things have changed since last year. Both situations call for help that can start quickly and scale with the calendar.

Bridges, distance and timing
Only two bridges connect Marco to the mainland: the S.S. Jolley Bridge on Collier Boulevard (SR 951) and the Stan Gober Memorial Bridge on San Marco Road near Goodland. In season, Collier Boulevard backs up, and the drive to Naples appointments can take far longer than the miles suggest. We plan visits with travel time built in, and we match companions who can reach the island reliably.
Medical care on and off the island
There is no hospital on Marco Island. The NCH Marco Island Urgent Care, in the Pat & Scot Kaufman Healthcare Center, is open daily from 8am to 7:30pm and has imaging and board-certified emergency physicians, but it is urgent care, not an emergency room. For emergencies, call 911. For hospital care and most specialists, residents go to the mainland in Naples. A companion can drive your loved one to appointments, wait with them, and send you notes. Companions do not provide nursing care or give medications.
After Hurricane Ian
Hurricane Ian brought about eight feet of storm surge to Marco Island in September 2022. Many residents lived through damage, displacement and long repairs. For someone with dementia, that kind of upheaval can leave lasting anxiety around storms, packing, or strangers in the house. The whole island is in an evacuation zone, so the plan for your loved one needs to be set well before a storm: where they will go on the mainland, who drives them, and what familiar items travel with them. Our hurricane preparedness guide helps you build that plan.
A slower pace for good days
Tigertail Beach has public parking and amenities and a quieter feel than busier beaches, which suits a short, early walk or simply sitting in the shade watching birds. The Collier County Public Library’s Marco Island branch is an air-conditioned spot for reading or a calm change of scenery. Many island visits stay home, though: a lanai, a cup of coffee, a photo album, and music from the decades your loved one remembers best. See our memory and engagement approach.
Condos and canal homes
- Condos. We arrange guest access and parking with the building and confirm elevator and gate procedures.
- Canal homes. Docks, seawalls and pools are a real risk if your loved one wanders. Tell us, and see our wandering guide.
- Golf carts and cars. If driving is no longer safe, the companion can handle errands to the grocery store and pharmacy.
Managing from up north
Many Marco families live in the Midwest or Northeast. After every visit you get a brief note, and each month we review the plan with you by phone or video. When your parents head north for summer, visits can pause, and we try to bring back the same companion when they return. Our long-distance families page covers documents and emergency contacts.
Planning a typical week of dementia home care in Marco Island
On the island, visits are usually longer and fewer, because travel time matters. Sample weeks:
| Plan | Schedule | Hours a week |
|---|---|---|
| Year-round parent, family up north in summer | Mon, Wed, Fri, 9am-2pm | 15 |
| Season couple, spouse needs a break | Tue and Sat, 10am-3pm | 10 |
| Weekly mainland appointment day | One 6-hour trip a week | 6 |
The three-day plan covers a parent who stays on Marco through the summer: breakfast, an early walk at Tigertail Beach, errands and lunch. The season plan gives a caregiving spouse two long breaks a week while the couple is here for winter. The appointment day accounts for the bridge, Collier Boulevard traffic and a long specialist visit in Naples or Fort Myers.
Our rate is $35/hour for 40+ hours a week; call us about shorter schedules. CareScout’s 2025 survey gives context: Florida’s median for assisted living was about $67,320 a year, and for a semi-private nursing home room about $124,100.
Respite and memory evaluation for island families
Collier County is served by the Area Agency on Aging for Southwest Florida. Its Elder HELPLINE, (866) 413-5337, screens for state Alzheimer’s Disease Initiative respite, which can be in-home, at a facility, on an emergency basis, or an extended stay of up to 30 days. Programs fill up, so call before you need it.
The state-designated memory clinic for Collier and Lee is the Lee Physicians Group Memory Care Clinic in Fort Myers, (239) 343-9220. A companion can make that drive with your loved one. Ask the clinic, or your loved one’s doctor, whether they participate in Medicare’s GUIDE dementia model, which can include up to $2,500 a year in respite. To the north, Senior Friendship Centers offers adult day services and caregiver support at its Bonita Springs location, (941) 955-2122.
Questions Marco families should ask
- Can the caregiver reliably reach the island in season, when Collier Boulevard backs up?
- Will you arrange condo guest access and parking, or gate access for a canal home?
- Can visits restart in the fall with the same caregiver?
- Who helps my parents leave the island if an evacuation is ordered?
- How will we hear about each visit from up north?
Our answers: travel time is built into every schedule, building and gate access is arranged in advance, we try to bring back the same companion each season, every companion is screened for dementia care experience, an evacuation plan is agreed with you before June, and a note follows every visit.
Before the first visit
- Condo or house access, parking and any golf cart rules.
- Dock, seawall and pool locations if your loved one tends to wander.
- Medication list and mainland doctors.
- Where your loved one would go on the mainland in an evacuation.
As needs grow
Families who only see a parent in winter are often surprised by how much has changed since last season. If that happens, start with more hours rather than fewer, and reassess after the first monthly review. When needs grow beyond what visits can cover, our in-home care vs. memory care comparison helps you think through the next step.
One more island-specific point: if your loved one still drives a golf cart or car on Marco, decide with their doctor whether that is still safe. A companion can take over trips to the grocery store, the library and church so giving up the keys feels less like losing independence. Our driving guide can help with that conversation.
