This guide covers dementia care in West Palm Beach and the rest of the county: clinics, day centers, the seasonal swing and costs.

Palm Beach County’s older population

Palm Beach County has roughly 1.58 million residents, and about 26% of them are 65 or older, more than 400,000 people (Census Bureau, 2025 estimates). That’s a higher share than Florida as a whole, which sits near 23%. The Alzheimer’s Association’s 2023 county estimates put Palm Beach fourth in the state for Alzheimer’s prevalence, at about 13.8% of residents 65 and up.

In practice, that means many families here are caring for someone at home, often a spouse in their late 70s or 80s looking after a partner, with adult children living out of state. The county is long, too: from Jupiter in the north to Boca Raton in the south is a serious drive on I-95, so who lives closest often matters as much as who is available.

Things that make Palm Beach County caregiving different

The seasonal swing

The county fills up from roughly late fall through spring. Appointment wait times, traffic and restaurant crowds all change with the season. If your loved one is a part-year resident, line up doctors and help before arrival, and plan for who checks in once the family heads north.

Hurricanes along the coast

Barrier-island and Intracoastal neighborhoods are the most likely to be told to leave in a storm. Look up the zone with Know Your Zone, and if your loved one needs help with daily living, add them to the state Special Needs Registry and call Palm Beach County Emergency Management about shelter options. Our hurricane guide has a full checklist.

Heat is the other constant. A person with dementia may forget to drink, wear a sweater in August, or turn off the AC to save money. Small daily checks make a big difference from June through September.

Gated communities are common here, from Wellington to Delray Beach. They feel safe, but they can also hide isolation. Someone can live behind the gate for months with few visitors while their memory slips. Signs worth watching include unpaid bills, spoiled food and missed appointments; our guide for people living alone with dementia covers next steps.

How Palm Beach County families use Dementia Companions

  1. Snowbird bridge. A companion who knows your loved one’s routine keeps it going through the summer, with a short note after each visit to the family up north.
  2. Spouse support. A husband caring for his wife in Jupiter books two or three afternoons of respite so he can golf, rest or see his own doctor.
  3. Adding a day program. Some families combine a day center on weekdays with a companion for mornings, evenings or weekends. See adult day vs. in-home respite.
  4. Delaying a move. Families weighing a move to memory care often try steady in-home help first; our comparison lays out costs and trade-offs.

Our rate is $35 an hour for 40+ hours a week, with no contract. Read the Florida cost guide and paying for dementia care to plan a budget, including checking whether a long-term-care insurance policy may reimburse companion care.

How families budget for dementia care in West Palm Beach

Palm Beach County’s seasonal rhythm shapes many schedules. Sample plans are below. Our rate is $35/hour for 40+ hours a week; call us about shorter schedules.

PlanScheduleHours a weekWeekly costAbout per month
Off-season company for a year-round parentMon-Thu, 10am-2pm16Call for a quote

Evening help after a day programMon-Fri, 4pm-7pm15Call for a quote

The evening plan is popular with working families: a day center covers the daytime, and a companion meets your loved one at home, serves dinner and keeps the late afternoon calm until you arrive.

CareScout’s 2025 Florida medians put assisted living at about $67,320 a year and adult day health care at about $19,500, so combining a specialized day center with a few companion hours is often the most affordable way to keep someone home longer.

Medicare’s GUIDE model and other respite in Palm Beach County

Since July 2024, Medicare’s GUIDE dementia model has let participating providers offer care navigation, a support line, caregiver training and up to $2,500 a year in respite to eligible patients. In May 2025, Baptist Health’s Marcus Neuroscience Institute in Boca Raton announced it had joined. Ask your loved one’s neurologist or primary care practice whether they participate.

For state-funded respite, the Area Agency on Aging of Palm Beach/Treasure Coast helpline is 1-866-684-5885 (weekdays, 8am-5pm). Alzheimer’s Community Care, described above, serves Palm Beach, Martin and St. Lucie counties.

Questions to ask a Palm Beach County home care provider

  1. Can the caregiver be added to our gatehouse or condo guest list before day one?
  2. Will the same caregiver come back when my parents return for the season?
  3. Can visits start or end at a day center, so the handoff is smooth?
  4. Are there higher rates for weekends or for later-stage needs?
  5. How will family members up north be kept informed?

With us: gate and condo access arranged in advance, the same companion whenever possible, companions screened for dementia care experience, $35 an hour for 40+ hours a week on any day of the week, and a note after each visit.
