OUR STORY

The people behind your loved one's care

Dementia Companions was built by a family who lived through the search — and couldn’t find what they were looking for. We created the service we wished had existed: consistent, trained, genuinely caring companions matched to your loved one’s personality, not just their schedule. Every match we make is built to last, because we know how much stability matters when memory fades.

MEET OUR FOUNDER

Built from personal experience

Dementia Companions was founded by two people who had experienced dementia care from the inside — a nurse, and a family member who had cared for a parent with dementia. Both had seen first-hand what good care could look like, and what it so often did not: agency staff who changed constantly, strangers who didn’t know the family’s routines, and a system built around availability rather than compatibility.

Together, they founded Dementia Companions to fix that. Every companion is hand-selected, dementia-trained, and matched to the specific personality, interests, and routines of your loved one — then they stay. The same face, every visit.

Today, we serve families across Miami, Tampa, Orlando, and Jacksonville — and that founding principle hasn’t changed: care should feel like a relationship, not a service.

What sets us apart isn’t just the training — it’s the commitment. We don’t shuffle companions based on scheduling. When we make a match, we protect it. That consistency is what allows real trust to form between your loved one and the person showing up at their door.

WHAT WE STAND FOR

Our values shape every match we make

At Dementia Companions, we believe the quality of a companion relationship shapes the entire care experience for your loved one. These three principles guide every match we make — and every decision we take on behalf of the families we serve.

01

Consistency above all

Dementia care is built on familiarity. We match once and we keep that relationship — the same companion, the same routines, visit after visit. No strangers, no surprises. Familiar faces reduce anxiety and help your loved one feel genuinely at home, even on harder days.

02

Personality-first matching

We don’t assign whoever is available. We interview families and companions to find a genuine personality fit — because a companion your loved one actually looks forward to seeing is a companion who can truly help. A good match makes every visit something to look forward to, not something to endure.

03

Trained specifically for dementia

Every companion is AHCA Level 2 background-screened and dementia-trained before their first visit. They understand communication, de-escalation, and how to create a calm, familiar environment. But beyond credentials, we specifically look for people with patience, warmth, and genuine empathy — because dementia care requires more than a checklist.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Questions families ask us most

How is Dementia Companions different from a home care agency?

Traditional agencies rotate staff and assign whoever is available. We make a single, deliberate match between your loved one and a compatible companion — and we keep that match consistent. The same person, every visit, building a real relationship. That continuity isn’t just more comfortable — for someone living with dementia, it can make a meaningful difference in how safe and settled they feel each day.

How quickly can we get started?

Most families are matched and have their first visit scheduled within 48 hours of their initial call. We move quickly because we know the situation rarely waits. Our matching process is designed to be efficient without cutting corners — we still take the time to find the right fit, we’ve just built the systems to do it fast.

What kind of training do your companions have?

Every companion is AHCA Level 2 background-screened and completes dementia-specific training before their first visit. This includes communication strategies, de-escalation, behavioral understanding, and emergency procedures. We don’t send anyone to a family’s home until we’re confident they’re ready — not just willing.

What areas of Florida do you serve?

We currently serve families in Miami, Tampa, Orlando, and Jacksonville — with surrounding suburbs and communities included in each metro area. Each of these cities has a dedicated team of vetted companions. We’re actively expanding, so if you’re outside these areas, reach out and we’ll let you know our timeline for your location.

What does a companion actually do during a visit?

Every visit is tailored to what your loved one enjoys and needs. This might include conversation, gentle activities, music, walks, light meal preparation, or simply being a calm, familiar presence. We build the routine around your loved one, not around a task list. Over time, as the companion gets to know your family member deeply, those visits become genuinely meaningful — not just scheduled check-ins.

Is the initial consultation really free?

Yes — completely free, no commitment required. We’ll take time to understand your situation, answer your questions honestly, and only recommend our service if we genuinely believe we’re the right fit. There’s no hard sell and no pressure. Our goal is to make sure you feel confident and informed before taking any next step.
